The City of Britt is pleased to provide you with an update regarding the new water
treatment plant. The new plant started producing filtered and softened water on August
31, 2024 Due to the changes in water chemistry the water system is transitioning from
using chloramines to free chlorine for disinfection.
The City of Britt is working hard to adjust the water treatment process to complete this
transition and ensure high-quality drinking water is delivered to your home. It may take
some time to optimize the new disinfection chemistry and periodic flushing of the
distribution system will occur.
During this time, you may be noticing the taste and smell of chlorine in the drinking
water. Discoloration may also occur. The water is still safe to drink but these issues can
be mitigated by running a faucet until the water clears.
Water customers should be aware that residual chlorine must be removed from the
water prior to its use in fish aquariums and ponds, or kidney dialysis. Kidney dialysis
patients should follow your doctor’s recommendations. Medical centers that perform
dialysis commonly remove the chloramines or chlorine that enters the dialysis
machines. You should consult your physician if you have any questions or concerns
regarding the use of water for dialysis.
